X-Mouse Button Control Not Working? Quick Fixes & Troubleshooting Guide

X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) is renowned for its lightweight reliability, but occasionally users run into situations where custom button mappings stop firing, profiles fail to auto-switch, or games ignore remapped side clicks. Here are the 5 most common causes and how to fix them quickly.

Fix 1: Run XMBC as Administrator (For Games & Elevated Apps)

In Windows 11 and 10, Windows User Account Control (UAC) enforces strict security boundaries (UIPI). If a game, terminal, or installer is running with administrative privileges, standard user-level applications cannot send simulated keystrokes to it.

• Exit XMBC completely by right-clicking the system tray icon and choosing Exit.
• Search for X-Mouse Button Control in the Windows Start Menu, right-click, and select Run as administrator.
• To make this permanent: right-click the XMBC desktop shortcut → Properties → Compatibility → check Run this program as an administrator.

Fix 2: OEM Driver Conflicts (Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, iCUE)

If you have proprietary software installed (such as Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, or Corsair iCUE), they may be intercepting mouse buttons before XMBC can receive them.

• Open your mouse manufacturer's software.
• Ensure Button 4 and Button 5 are set to their default generic definitions (often labeled Forward / Back or Generic Mouse Button 4/5).
• Do not map manufacturer-level macros to those buttons if you want XMBC to manage them.

Fix 3: Verify the Profile Window Match Criteria

If an application-specific profile fails to trigger when you switch to that program:

1. Open XMBC Setup and select the problematic profile.
2. Click Edit.
3. Check the Process name (e.g. game.exe). If the game runs through a launcher (like Steam or Epic Games), make sure you selected the actual game client executable rather than the game launcher.
4. Try unchecking Window caption to ensure title bar changes don't disqualify the match.

Fix 4: Check if "Disable X-Mouse Button Control" Is Active

It is easy to accidentally toggle XMBC off. Look at your Windows taskbar system tray:

• If the mouse icon has a red cross over it, XMBC is disabled.
• Right-click the tray icon and uncheck Disable X-Mouse Button Control, or click the tray icon and press your global toggle hotkey.
