How to Set Up X-Mouse Button Control: Complete Beginner's Guide

Modern computer mice frequently come equipped with extra physical buttons—typically located near the thumb rest (known as Button 4 and Button 5). By default in Windows, these buttons often remain unutilized or only offer basic browser "Back" and "Forward" actions. X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) unlocks the full potential of your hardware by allowing you to reprogram every button to execute keystrokes, launch applications, or control multimedia.

Step 1: Downloading & Installing XMBC Safely

First, head over to the official X-Mouse Button Control download page and download the verified installer package (XMouseButtonControlSetup.2.20.5.zip). After extraction, run the setup wizard with standard permissions.

Once installation finishes, XMBC minimizes automatically to your system tray (the bottom-right notification area of your Windows taskbar, represented by an orange mouse icon). Double-click this icon to open the main Setup interface.

Step 2: Understanding the Main Interface

The setup window is cleanly split into two sections:

• Left Pane (Application / Window Profiles): Displays your active profiles. The Default profile is always present and acts globally whenever an active application does not have a dedicated profile.
• Right Pane (Button Mapping Layers): Displays up to 10 customizable layers containing dropdown menus for every physical mouse input: Left Button, Right Button, Middle Button, Mouse Button 4, Mouse Button 5, Wheel Up, Wheel Down, Tilt Wheel Left, and Tilt Wheel Right.

Step 3: Creating an Application-Specific Profile

One of XMBC's strongest features is the ability to automatically switch button behaviors based on which application is currently active on your screen (e.g. Chrome, Discord, Photoshop, or your favorite PC game).

1. Click the Add button located beneath the left profile list.
2. A dialog box will show all currently running applications. Select your target program (for example, chrome.exe or discord.exe), or click ... to browse for the executable manually.
3. Enter a recognizable profile description name and click OK.

Step 4: Mapping Actions to Mouse Buttons

With your profile selected, click on the right pane to assign actions. For instance, to turn Mouse Button 4 into a Copy command and Mouse Button 5 into a Paste command:

1. Locate the Mouse Button 4 dropdown and select Copy (Ctrl+C).
2. Locate the Mouse Button 5 dropdown and select Paste (Ctrl+V).
3. Alternatively, select Simulated Keystrokes to enter custom hotkeys like {ALT}{TAB} or {CTRL}{SHIFT}{ESC}.

Step 5: Utilizing Multi-Layer Switching

XMBC provides up to 10 layers per profile. For example, Layer 1 can be your standard web browsing controls, while Layer 2 acts as a dedicated media control layer (where the scroll wheel adjusts volume and buttons skip tracks). You can switch between layers using hotkeys or by holding down a modifier button.

Step 6: Saving & Testing Your Changes

Always remember to click the Apply button in the bottom-right corner before closing the window. Your new button remappings take effect instantly without requiring a computer reboot.
