How to Control Windows Volume with Your Mouse Scroll Wheel

Having to reach for your keyboard volume keys or click into the Windows system tray every time you want to adjust audio is distracting. Using X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC), you can configure your mouse wheel to adjust Windows master volume effortlessly without interfering with normal webpage or document scrolling.

Method 1: Adjust Volume While Hovering Over the Taskbar (Recommended)

The most elegant configuration is allowing normal scrolling on webpages, but automatically turning the scroll wheel into a volume knob whenever your cursor hovers over the Windows taskbar.

1. Launch XMBC Setup and click Add to create a new profile.
2. In the applications list, click Window... and hover your cursor over the Windows Taskbar until it highlights Shell_TrayWnd (Windows Explorer Taskbar).
3. Give this profile a name, such as Taskbar Volume, and click OK.
4. In the right pane, map:
   • Wheel Up: Volume Up
   • Wheel Down: Volume Down
   • Middle Button: Mute / Unmute
5. Click Apply. Now, simply glide your mouse over the taskbar and roll the wheel to change PC sound levels!

Method 2: Modifier Key Volume Adjustment (e.g. Alt + Wheel)

If you prefer adjusting volume anywhere on your screen:

1. Open XMBC Setup and select the Default profile.
2. Click the Layer 2 tab.
3. In Layer 2, map Wheel Up to Volume Up and Wheel Down to Volume Down.
4. Go to the Modifier Keys tab in XMBC Setup, and assign Alt (or a side mouse button) as the trigger to switch temporarily to Layer 2 while held.
5. Click Apply. Now, holding Alt while scrolling changes master volume anywhere!

Fine-Tuning Volume Step Size

By default, each mouse wheel notch alters Windows volume by 2%. If you want faster or slower volume adjustments, open XMBC Settings → Advanced to calibrate mouse wheel lines and notch sensitivity.
